Cassel and Vrabel Traded to Chiefs for Second Rounder, Being a Patriot Apparently No Longer Cool

Yesterday the Denver Broncos signed Jabar Gaffney and Lonnie Paxton away from the Patriots among their 6 signings. Today more Patriots are expected to flee the coop, with Mike Vrabel and Karaoke Legend Matt Cassel both being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for their 2009 second round pick.

Cassel I certainly saw getting traded, as having $25-30 million locked up in two guys, when only one of them can see the field at a time, is tricky. It still remains to be seen whether Brady will be back at full strength (or at all) but I think it's a good risk. I also think it's a good risk for new Chiefs GM former Pats Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli, as Cassel showed a lot of poise last year in almost leading the Pats to the playoffs. The only real loser here is Tyler Thigpen, who was pretty great late in the year for an awful Chiefs team.

Vrabel, I didn't see coming, but I'm okay with. He's getting older and less effective, but he was still the heart and soul of the Patriots Defense many a time. He's going to bring some great veteran leadership to that Chiefs Defense and hopefully his winning mindset will create postive change for them over there.

In lesser news, the Bills signed former Bengal Ryan Fitzpatrick today. I'm actually a big fan of Fitzpatrick from his days with the Rams, and so I'm liking these signing for the Bills. The downside here is for Lee Evans, as this move essentially signals the end of J.P. Losman's time in Buffalo, which means a lot less longballs for Evans.

Finally, the NBA did something right

Usually when the NBA makes decisions, they tend to be the wrong decisions. Most teams currently need to be bail-out and the league has a growing concussion problem.

However Dwayne Wade's decorative band-aids seem to be topping the list at the moment of the most important things that the NBA has to deal with. Wade's decorative band-aids have not been nullified by the league since they are used for decorative purposes as told to Wade by NBA spokesman Tim Frank.

Actually for once I do not disagree with the NBA, they cheesy as hell. Also, could open the flood gates for other things that the players could wear to sell their own merchandise. Wade is a great player but ditch the band-aids.

President Obama did get great seats...

If I think about this for a second, I do not remember the last time that a US president attend a NBA regular season game.

However Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama attended the Wizards home game against his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. Obama invited the Bulls to the White House earlier and it figures that D.C.'s team was a little peeved by that.

The Wiz Kids blew out the Bulls, 113-90.

Stephon Marbury first basket as a Celtic

The Stephon Marbury situation never seemed to die but that melo-drama has finally ended as Marbury took the floor as a Boston Celtic against the Indiana Pacers.

Marbury ended his night playing thirteen minutes with eight points, two assists, and one steal.

Marbury and the Celtics beat the Pacers by the score of 104-99.

Denver Broncos apparently care about winning more than 8 games, sign 6 solid players

What do you do if you recently cut a bunch of players and freed up about $30 million in cap space? Well hopefully you spend some of it.

Well the Denver Broncos spent a lot of it on the first day of free agency, signing RBs J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter, LS Lonnie Paxton, WR Jabar Gaffney and Safeties Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. As a Patriots fan and a Dawkins fan, these moves make me wants to love the Broncos. But lets take a look at their actual effect, shall we?

Arrington and Buckhalter are good pieces, but interesting considering this was a team that was rumored to maybe take a run at Derrick Ward. Arrington is definitely more of a depth guy, given his great special teams play and his speedback style. Buckhalter is less understood. A lot of sites are saying that he will battle incumbents Peyton Hillis and Ryan Torain for the starting job, but what does this make of Selvin Young and Andre Hall? Give them all inconsistent carries like Shanahan did and watch them be inconsistent. Give Young or Torain or Hall the starting role and let them run with it and who knows what could happen. Considering Buckhalter is 31 and all the other guys are in their early to mid 20's, I don't see what Denver was thinking there.

Paxton seems like a great signing to me as he is one of the best at what he does, though it hurts me to see him go as a Patriots fan. Gaffney gives me similar feelings since he too is a former Patriot, but I actually think he might be the Broncos best signing as he'll form a sweeeet 3 WR set with Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. Add in that he came at a very cheap $2.5 million a year with only $3 million guranteed, and that is a very solid low risk high reward signing.

As for the safeties, the Willenium in me loves the Dawkins signing because he is one of my favorite football players ever, but he's not quite the guy he used to be. Regardless, his leadership will be huge, and will hopefully help right the Denver defense. But Renaldo Hill? I get that Randy Moss is a beast, but it's hard to believe that a former DB coach would encourage his team to sign a guy who was lit up by his former team's WR like this. And like this. But hey, I'm not a head coach.

Today's Moment of Zen: "Play of the Decade"

Ah, 1994. The memories seem to fly back to everyone who lived in it. There was a time before Kevin Garnett that the Minnesota Timberwolves had a slam dunk champion and budding star in Isaiah "J.R." Rider.

However his most memorable play came from a regular season game against the Sacramento Kings when he took a pass that was overthrown, and threw the ball behind his head for a three point shot.

Hey look, an Olden Polynice sighting.

Kellen Winslow is a Tampa Bay Buccaneer

The Cleveland Browns traded away Pro Bowl TE Kellen Winslow today to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The picks have not yet been revealed, but it's an interesting trade given Winslow's high potential. As much as his injuries and disgruntled behavior have plagued this franchise, he was still a favorite target in the Browns passing game and now leaves Steve Heiden as the number one TE for the Browns.

In side news, Fred Taylor is officially a New England Patriot. I'm happy, though I've heard that the Patriots may consider cutting fan favorite Kevin Faulk since he's due $3.5 million in 2009. I really hope that's not the case.

In Memoriam: Johnny "Red" Kerr 1932-2009

We have some sad news to report at Outside the Boxscore, former Chicago Bulls coach and broadcaster Johnny "Red" Kerr has passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Kerr was the Bulls head coach from 1966-1968 and then served as the color commentator for the 1975-2008. He truly was a legend among broadcasters and for those Bulls fan who grew up during the Jordan era in the '90s, he was one of the major voices of it.

Only a few weeks in the past on February 10th, 2009 was Johnny "Red" Kerr day in Chicago and the Bulls honored him by presenting a statue of him that would stand outside the stadium.

He was one of the finalist to be considered for the Basketball Hall of Fame and no doubt should be put in now after his timely demise.

The important thing about Kerr was that he kept an honest opinion and continued to cheer for the Bulls regardless of the team and it's make up. He will be missed along with Bulls legend Norm Van Lier who passed away earlier in the day.

Our condolences to his family and the Chicago Bulls organization for this loss.

Albert Haynesworth is the 100 million dollar man

Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is now a 100 million dollar man as he has agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins. The deal has been listed as a seven year deal worth up to 115 million dollars.

Haynesworth is one of the best defensive players in the game and helped Tennessee Titans to a AFC South division title.

This is the second big defensive free agent signing by the Redskins as they signed former Raiders defensive-back DeAngelo Hall to deal with up to 54 million dollars.

Today's Moment of Zen: Gary Payton is living large....and legal

A couple of days ago, I posted Jason Kidd rapping on the infamous "B-Ball Best Kept Secrets." However, there were many others.

Gary Payton who is current working on NBA TV's "Game Night" produced a track called, "Livin Legal and Large."

Honestly, I will give "The Glove" credit for trying but I think I figured out why this CD did not sell. Also, alert NBA TV of this track and Chris Webber will have a field day with this.

Nebraska chokes, +1 for Chappelle's Show reference

For those of you who did not get to see the Texas A&M and Nebraska game on Tuesday, he is the final six minutes where Nebraska blows a seven point lead and makes a myriad of mistakes near the end.

However, the real reason why this video is up is the comment made by color commentator Doug Gottlieb who drops the "Game Blouses" at the 8:15 mark.

Most of you probably know that it was a Chappelle's Show reference from the Charlie Murphy stories about Prince. If you did not, where the hell have you been?

Towel-Gate in Detroit--Update

The Detroit Pistons have slowly been falling off the map of the Eastern Conference playoff race and now they will be without Rasheed Wallace for their upcoming game against the Orlando Magic.

In the Pistons loss last night against the New Orleans Hornets, Wallace received a technical foul and then was ejected after he threw a towel that a ballboy gave him into the stands.

It's "Rasheed being Rasheed."

To quickly switch to the Pistons woes, they have lost eight straight and currently stand 7th in playoff seeding in the East. Could they miss the playoffs? That is entirely possible and looks like maybe Chauncey Billups was not the problem and Allen Iverson is definitely not "The Answer."

Update: Rasheed Wallace will not be suspended for the game against the Orlando Magic due the ruling that once a player has to acquire more than 15 technical fouls for the automatic one game suspension to take affect. Wallace up to this point had received 16 technical fouls but two of them were rescinded.

Wallace currently to date has 14 technical fouls.

Today's Moment of Zen: NHL's first ever kick assist...almost

Usually when I post something here dealing with the NHL, the most likely reason is that it is either a bizzare highlight or a goal by Alexander Ovechkin.

In a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks from last Saturday, Toronto's Dominic Moore had a break-away opportunity to score. The only problem is that his stick broke from the previous play.

He decided to use some heads up thinking and use his skate to direct the puck to a team-mate. Very sadly, a save by goaltender Roberto Louongo ended the play as the Canucks ended up winning in a shoot-out 3-2.

Buccaneers Lose Minds, Cut Derrick Brooks

Today the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut LB Derrick Brooks, RB Warrick Dunn, WRs Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, and LB Cato June.

Galloway sure, he was injured basically all last year and did nothing. Hilliard and Dunn are nice pieces, but don't do nearly what they used to, though I'm sure Dunn will garner some interest in free agency. And June was decent for a LB, but guys like Quincy Black and Gerald Hayes might be able to replace him.

But cutting Derrick Brooks? The team claims the decision was made, as with Dunn, Hilliard, and Galloway, to get the team younger. So you want to cut a few injury plagued WRs, sure. But to cut your star 11 time Pro Bowl, 9 time All Pro, 2002 Defensive Player of the Year, 216+ consecutive starts, heart of your defense ROLB? Why in the world would you do that? Oh yeah, he's also heavily involved in community charity work and was a co winner of the 2000 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

I understand trying to get younger. But you don't cut your leadership, and you especially don't cut your stars. And on a Buccaneers team that really doesn't have a whole lot unless Cadillac Williams gets good again, I really don't get this choice. But then again, they're the same people who franchised Antonio Bryant, so I guess I don't get anything this franchise is doing lately.

I wish Brooks the best in his next stop, and particuarly hope that it is in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Browns are LB desperate and he'd look damn pretty in orange and brown.

People want to know what the Kidd did....

Honestly, I was rolling on the floor laughing after I found this rap song by Jason Kidd. Yes, that Jason Kidd who currently is playing point for the Dallas Mavericks.

This is off the 1994 basketball rap CD, "B-Balls Best Kept Secrets" which featured many NBA players which included Shaquille O'Neal, Isaiah (J.R.) Rider, Dennis Scott, Brian Shaw, Cedric Ceballos, and a host of others. I will chronicle some of the other songs in "Today's Moment of Zen."

Again I feel like Carson Daly, here is Jason Kidd featuring Money B with "What the Kidd did." (Also, it ain't no party like a J Kidd party.)

Tiger's Back!

Remember when you used to watch golf, there was a time were most people did and today everything changes. The great Tiger Woods is back from injury and currently playing in the World Golf Championships against Brendan Jones.

For some reason, I feel a little bit sorry for Brendan Jones but it is nice to have Tiger back playing golf. He is one of the few recognizable faces in the golfing world and the sporting world in general.

The effort, charisma, and consistency are trademarks of Tiger and make him the elite athlete in golf. However what makes Tiger so amazing is skill and placement of small circular object where most people cannot even keep it straight.

Welcome back Tiger, we and golf missed you.

Panthers Release Goings, Hackett, Bridges

Today the Carolina Panthers released three veterans: RB Nick Goings, WR D.J. Hackett, and OL Jeremy Bridges in a cap related move.

Goings, an 8 year vet, was a special team great but otherwise hadn't done a whole lot since 2004, when he ran for 100 yards in 4 straight games after injuries to the rest of the Panthers backs. He was pretty expendable this year, however, after DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart took charge at the RB position, and will save the Panthers 820k.

Hackett was actually kind of a surprise to me. He'll save the Panthers 1.2825 million and he's always had troubles with injuries, but he's been pretty great when healthy. I understand that when you're struggling to get under the cap you have to make moves, but it's a shame they had to cut this guy, and I'm wondering if he'll receive interest from some WR starved team like the Bears or Eagles.

Bridges saved the Panthers $2.375 million, and that's a lot of money to save considering he was kind of a plug and play offensive lineman. Versitility is a plus, but sometimes it just means you're not good enough to start somewhere full time, and this is more a case of that. But he'll be back somewhere.

Also, apparently Ken Lucas may be cut or traded, saving the Panthers $2.375 million. But that's speculation more than anything.

Damon Huard, Several More Impressive Guys Cut

Yesterday, the Chiefs cut CB Patrick Surtain, LB Donnie Edwards, QB Damon Huard, and waived TE Michael Merritt. Most of these moves were expected, but they saved the team at leats about $10 million in cap room, mostly thanks to Surtain and Edwards.

Both Surtain and Edwards were stars were the team they played for prior to the Chiefs, but both of them had more recently battled injuries and age to the tune of lesser performance. They'll both certainly join another team next season, but not for anywhere near last year's price.

As far as Huard, aside from his miracle 2006 of 11 TDs and 1 INT in 8 starts, he's been sort of a career backup. And after Tyler Thigpen showed his talents last year, Huard was deemed too expensive a backup. He's had stops with several teams in the league, and so again I wouldn't be suprised to see Huard on a team this coming year.

Michael Merritt didn't do much in his one rookie season with the Chiefs, but he did sign very very late for a seventh rounder due to injury and get charged with marijuana possession. So can't say it was a total waste of a year for the rookie TE.

Another #1 falls in college basketball, there's a tournament, right?

The Providence Friars on senior night decided to put on a show for the fans as they upset the #1 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers 81-73. This is the 6th time in the past eight weeks that the number one seed was upset.

There were numerous upsets over the weekend of Texas over #2 ranked Oklahoma and Maryland over #3 ranked North Carolina. However, these upsets will probably mean little in the scheme of things because of a little thing called the NCAA tournament.

Do not get me wrong, it is possible that a team specifically Pittsburgh could be costed of a number one seed in the tournament due to one of these losses. However, I am going to assume at this point that Pittsburgh/UConn, UNC, Oklahoma, and Memphis are the leading candidates for those number one seeds.

This is not college football where the "one and done" rules begin to apply. Also, to add to the fact, getting a number one seed in the NCAA tournament does not guarantee you a championship.

However give props to Providence for their victory and March Madness can not come soon enough.

Today's Moment of Zen: Rich Eisen runs the 40-yard dash

With the combine winding down, Rich Eisen of the NFL network decided to take his customary chance to run the 40-yard dash.

Eisen eventually clocked in at a pedestrian 6.34 but that was in a suit after working for four hours. (I got to give him some credit at least.)

However the funniest part was when the NFL Network staffers super-imposed combine clips of 40-yard dash times with Rich Eisen. Is he faster than B.J Raji?

Lebron is human, proof is in the gas!

I honestly cannot believe that I did not find this clip before but I guess it is better late than never.

During the Cavaliers game against the Detroit Pistons, an ESPN camera panned towards the bench as Lebron James walked out of the locker room. Anderson Varejao was sitting right next to him, then it happened.

Varejao "acted" more than on any flop of his career. The smile from Lebron just sealed it. Honestly, I really cannot think of a way to end this piece but I guess I'll let this one go.

Devin Harris pulls out a miracle

The game last night between the New Jersey Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers appeared to be a road win for the 76ers by the score of 96-95. They also appeared well on there way to snapping a three game losing streak. However Nets point guard Devin Harris pulled out a half-court buzzer-beater for the ages.

Harris ended the game with 39 points in the Nets 98-96 victory. The shot itself looked damn near impossible in less than two seconds but the replays all show that the ball is out of Harris's hands after the shot.

That play is almost reminisce of Milt Pilacio in 2001. Unbelievable.

Today's Moment of Zen: "Ram It"

Remember the 1980's, those were some fun times. NFL teams during that period of time decided on a corny idea to create team music videos.

Many teams had them. One of the best was the Los Angeles Rams with their trademark diddy "Ram It" as the band, "The Rammers". Maybe, they could have thought of the possible ramifications and possible double entandras in their music video.

Oh well, here it is and remember, "I like to ram it as you can see, nobody likes ramming it more than me."

Fred Taylor - Future New England Patriot?

We already covered that Fred Taylor was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, today NFL.com reported that he is visiting the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday and the New England Patriots on Wednesday. And as a Patriots fan, I could not be more hopeful/excited.

For one, I don't think the Bills will sign Taylor. I think he'd play well for them, but Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch and his above Ghost Riding Skills won't be denied the ball, even if he can't stay out of legal trouble. And the Bills already have a solid backup in Fred Jackson, who does a decent Beast Mode himself.

As for the Patriots? Laurence Maroney has never proven much of anything. Sammy Morris is nice (and also has beast mode capabilities), but he's not a feature back. And Kevin Faulk is a fan favorite and one of the better third down backs ever (and a big Lil Wayne fan), but again, not a feature back.

So where does Taylor fit in? Hard to totally say, but he definitely could. Morris is more of a tough yardage back, while Faulk fills that 3rd down/pass catcher out of the backfield role. Taylor is a bit of both, and as such could handle a lot of 1st and 2nd down duties, especially if Maroney went down and was cut. Granted, cutting Maroney would seem like kind of a waste, given that he was once a first round pick. But I'm much rather the Pats have Taylor available to light it up among four RBs than a Morris/Faulk/Heath Evans three man attack when Maroney, inevitably, goes down. I'd be curious to see if Taylor or Maroney would/could play some special teams were the team to sign Taylor and keep 4 RBs, as that would make the roster spot less of a luxury.

Regardless, Patriots please sign Fred Taylor if the money is right. Defense is a far more pressing need that Offense for this team (especially at LB), but it's always nice to have a stud RB on your team, and Taylor is still more than capable of getting it done.

Rich Eisen is smarter than an NFL combiner.....

Ah, the glory of the NFL combine. The 40-times, the players who do not show up on schedule, and the late-rounders who upgrade themselves from 6th round pick to a 4th round pick.

However, Rich Eisen of the NFL Network decided to see if he was smarter than an NFL player at the combine by taking the infamous wonderlic test.

The wonderlic test is a fifty question test used to check the players intellect. Only one NFL player Harvard's own Pat McInally have scored perfectly on the test. Could Eisen be the second? Watch the video and see.

Combine Casualties

I always thought of the NFL Combine as a time of hope. All of these players come out and try to show their best, hoping to get drafted by a decent team, or even at all in the case of some players. This year, however, has been different, as all sorts of players are having issues with injuries and the like, preventing them from showing much of anything to anyone. These include:

- USC LB Rey Maualuga came up limping at the end of his 40 yard dash. He'll still likely be drafted very high anyways though, given his high level of play, extreme tenacity, and good taste in sideline reporters.

- Texas DE Brian Orakpo limped off the field as well. One of the better DE prospects in the draft, Orakpo projects as an OLB. He's also a Law Student and a Beast.

- In one of the saddest stories of the day, NU TE Brian Mandeville was told that he ought to retire due to a non life threatening issue with one of his heart valves. NU is a small school and it's pretty amazing, as a result, to be combine invited from there. So it's a shame that Mandeville had this happen, and we here at Outside the Boxscore hope everything works out for him, NFL or no NFL.

- Lastly, and non injury related, the story of the weekend seemed to be Alabama OT Andre Smith missing Saturday's combine workout. Smith claims that he accomplished just about everything he wanted by answering questions and giving his weight among other things, and that he had then left earlier than scheduled to begin working out for the March 11th Pro Day. He didn't work out for the combine because he just switched trainers and didn't feel he could impress everyone as he hoped to. Hopefully when he does work out it'll be impressive enough to win over all of those people who have been befuddled with his decisions so far.

Did Dwight Howard just do that?

Very sadly, I did not get a chance to watch the Miami Heat take on the Orlando Magic. What I did miss was Dwayne Wade dropping his career high 50 points but Dwight Howard was more magical than that.

Howard had 32 points and 17 rebounds in the Magic 122-99 victory. However during the pre-game he attempted the shot in the video above and made it.

I guess TNT made the wrong decision on who should have been in the Horse Competition.

Epochrypha: Under a Redemptive Sun

In bi-weekly installments, OtB brings you a long-form joint re: NBA and its ontological extension unto all of sport. Epochrypha: writings or statements of questionable authorship or authenticity, but always impassioned and always with an eye on the times we're spectating in. Enjoy.

Watching Steve Nash repeatedly drive into the paint and then look for the shooters (or the bomb standing right there that is Shaq), I was struck by a feeling of redemption. Like any other sports fan in the last week, I’ve been aware of the 140 pointers Phoenix has been throwing up and the “ultimate barometer” of such a streak going against the “vaunted” Celtics’ teeth. But honestly? I don’t care. What is a heat check? A heaved, unadvised three with 12 on the 24. That’s like a show down with Dirty Harry at high noon, my friends, and let me whisper what you should already know. You don’t win those gun fights unless the sun and the wind and the dust are just right. The other thing you should know, though? It doesn’t matter if you win. It’s just having the cajones to be there, to draw your pistol, to be a man about it.

The Suns are like the embodiment of that high noon heat check. I don’t care if they lose, not if they’re playing the way my aesthetic sensibilities tell me they should play. And sports fans? Under Gentry, they’re back to those who-cares-about-winning ways. Don’t get it twisted. Of course they want to win. Of course that’s what a professional athletic organization should be about. Except they also need to be about putting butts in the seat. Entertainment value. Fuck that. Entertainment value is something you talk about on some corporate talk show bull shit in the shadow of Jordan’s third retirement when all you could smell was the quiet dusk of Tim Duncan bank shots and Kobe wasting away in 40 point futility. Fast forward to last season. The Celtics are suddenly unstoppable. The Lakers get Pau. The Suns try to revivify SSOL with a shot of the Diesel. And we saw the dawn of the Lebron-Chris Paul-Dwight Howard age. It’s a time of unbridled excitement that we could not envision coming down from. And it’s sacrilege to talk about this regeneration of the league in terms of “entertainment value”. Fuck that. What we’re talking about is sheer joy on the hardwood. It’s something we’d maybe glimpsed during the Lakers’ three-peat, but really until last year we hadn’t thought it could be recaptured in such wondrously uproarious fashion.

This season has proved quite a let down. Maybe the Mayans were right about 2012, but I can’t see beyond 2010. There’s been all the corner cutting cap watching, some of it under the guise of 2010 prep. There’s been the rash of injuries to important players. And then there’s been the total dismemberment of SSOL basketball. This season has been dotted with hints that this is indeed the waning hours of the (basketball) world. How, after such a hopeful 07-08 season, did this happen? But just look at the rhetoric being thrown out. The .800 teams have been deemed “juggernauts,” consuming all in their path. The big match-ups have been referred to as “Armageddon.” If Lebron is the chosen one and we are all witnesses, doesn’t that mean the judgment is coming? I don’t know, and I’m sorry for spitting a hundred words about the pain that has been the first half of this season. But here’s what I see this Sunday afternoon. Redemption.

Forget the Olympics. Forget Garnett’s hallowed re-jubilation at immersion in a winning franchise. This Phoenix team under Gentry is the real redeem team. Look, last season the Celtics looked like poster boys for second chances, but did Garnett, Pierce, and Shuttlesworth really need a chance at redemption. Sure, they saved themselves from being this generation’s Barkley or Malone, but being that kind of iconic no-ring thing was no crime. Increasingly this year, the Celtics have looked like tired heroes who continue to hew on because they know nothing else but dogged determinism. I don’t want to sound like a tired lit-head, but you can’t mistake the images that do battle today behind the eyes of a Suns-Celts match-up. The Celts are Ozymandiac. They stand for old blood, dark and mysterious powers that be, Stonehenge (sorry, but it works). Then look at the Suns. From the wreckage of this season, they have risen. What name could be more totemic than the Phoenix Suns? Of course Sun worship is much older than any cloistered, druidic practice, but it’s also much newer, much more alive. Okay, enough symbolism.

Just look at the pieces that make up this team. They truly beg for a second chance. Let’s start with Gentry. This is his third head coaching gig. He may still hold the title of “interim” for this season, but really I think that’s worth ignoring. He interim’d once before in Miami and had (near) three year stints with both Detroit and the Clips. It should be noted that Gentry was the coach of that Pistons team that featured Grant Hill and Stackhouse that peaked with a first-round defeat but seemed so much more significant. It’s been six years since Gentry’s given head coaching a try. It seems like it’s been due. How many head coaches go back to being assistants? Porter being named over him after D’Antoni’s departure was a travesty.

Speaking of Hill, he’s the poster boy of the wonders this Phoenix staff has been able to pull off. Hill was heir apparent for awhile, but then the unfortunate Orlando turn. Seeing his wife sing at the all-star game, I don’t think there’s any fan who wouldn’t want Grant Hill to have more than a marginally successful last stop on his resume. This was a guy who seriously could have been the greatest ever if he had been in different situations. Or, at least he could’ve been the greatest second fiddle ever, surpassing Pippen. Look at his first couple years of stats. The guy did 20, 10, and 7 his second year. Think about that. That’s a few more made shots by Alan Houston away from the trio of stats everyone’s lauding Lebron for even approaching.

The list of players rejuvenated by this Phoenix system goes on. Amar’e Stoudemire comes back from microfracture. Shaq comes back from lethargy and “Kobe, tell me how my ass taste” (the thought that he would get on stage and do that still gets me rolling in the aisles). He also needs this because he doesn’t want to bookend his career with disappointing showings. What other superstar of his magnitude has his record for disappointing potential? Matt Barnes goes from fading act on the Warriors to legit contributor. Steve Nash looked like he was never going to be recognized as the innovator he became until the Phoenix trainers taught him how to take care of his back. With the trade of Boris Diaw and Raja Bell, we saw the shipping out of two underwhelming presences for Jason Richardson who, at first glance, doesn’t seem like he’s a case necessitating redemption. But look at his career path. He and Hibachi both had vertical trajectories in terms of being looked at as elite scorers in the league. Then he was the chosen cog lifted from that breathless we-believe Warriors team. Despite the 23 ppg the season before, they felt he was expendable. In Charlotte, he did anything but blossom, overshadowed by the presences of Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor, and the Mustache. Banner list of guys to be behind in terms of name recognition. Or, did you remember J-Rich is a two time slam dunk champ (though that means less now that Krypto-Nate has arrived)? He’s another case of systematic disappearing act hopefully remedied by this Suns turn around.

What about Leandro Barbosa? Surely he’s not in need of redemption. Wrong. He’s in dire need of a second chance too. He averaged 18 ppg in 06-07 and was named sixth man of the year. At that point, he was projected to have the kind of significance Manu has for the Spurs. Perennially in the race for that reward again. But his scoring has dipped by almost five points in the last season and a half. Another vanishing act. In the past four games, however, he’s been averaging 24, hitting for 41 against OKC. That’s what you want to see. Barbosa is indeed the spirit animal of this team (cf. Macrophenomenal Almanac), meaning he’s in need of redemption just as much as any of his teammates. Just having to ask about him should tip you to this fact.

Again, I don’t think this team needs to win to make their collective second chances legitimate. They don’t even need to make noise in the playoffs, and with Amar’e out there’s a good chance they won’t. All they need to do is keep playing like this. Beautiful, moving basketball. Because if you can be beautiful and moving, you should be. Realizing this makes a second chance worth having.

Marty Turco, skate save?

Usually when we post an NHL video here on Outside the Boxscore, it usually a fight or an amazing goal by Sidney Crosby/Alexander Ovechkin.

However this skate save by Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco against the Chicago Blackhawks might be one of the best that I have ever seen.

Very sadly, however the Blackhawks got the victory by the score of 3-1 and the season sweep of the Stars.

Today's Moment of Zen: So you've think you seen every MJ clip on youtube, wrong!

In today's Moment of Zen, I figure that most of you have probably trolled the internet looking for clips of Michael Jordan.

However I think that I have found a clip that most of you have not seen. We flash back to 1988 where the NBA All-Stars faced off against the US Olympic team. The US Olympic team consisted of college stars including Danny Manning, Mitch Richmond and David Robinson that were to play in Seoul, Korea. (The team eventually won bronze)

They played an exhibition against the NBA all stars who included Michael Jordan, Mugsy Bogues, Charles Barkley and Sam Perkins. You get to see some vintage Jordan here.

You also have to love the commentary by the announcers who say that an NBA team would blow out any Olympic team in Spain in 1992. Dream Team, anyone?

How to lay the smackdown by Jim Calhoun

Usually UConn men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun is the type of coach who does not speak out against the media. However after the team's victory against the University of South Florida, he received an interesting question from a reporter from the Hartford Courant.

Ken Krayeske asked a question about Jim Calhoun's salary and Calhoun did not appreciate that question. Honestly, you could hear the groans of the media during the interview. Krayeske who is a freelance reporter decided to ask the question of the salary of Calhoun over anything relevant to the basketball team.

I figure that Krayeske just wants his ten minutes of fame and honestly may feel that people should know about Calhoun's salary. However he chose a pretty douchebaggy way to ask a question. The question should been asked personally to Calhoun rather than at a press conference.

Maybe he should listen to Calhoun and just "sit down and shut up."

Lebron James drops a pedestrian 55

In the night that was in the NBA, the true star was Cleveland Cavaliers forward Lebron James who scored 55 points in a 111-103 victory.

The Bucks jumped out to an early lead but Lebron slowly and surely guided the Cavaliers to an easy win. It gets to the point where we marvel at Lebron much like we did Jordan and any regular performance seems below Lebron's caliber.

There does seem to be a debate of who is going to be the MVP in the NBA but it is getting tough to deny Lebron that accolade now.

Emmitt Smith and ESPN part ways, ESPN still owes him sex

I think it is safe to say that Emmitt Smith was a better football player than he was an ESPN NFL analyst. Very sadly though, Emmitt has been left go by ESPN which was first reported by Mike Florio of PFT.

Emmitt was mostly known as an ESPN analyst who had trouble finding his words and even sometimes making up words. However, he did provide some solid analysis and his legacy as being the all-time rushing king helped his cause of being hired. Good luck to Emmitt wherever he ends up.

However, my favorite moment is still have mouthing the words to the Young Jeezy song "Put On." I guess "bitches still owe him sex."

Today's Moment of Zen: Jodie Meeks drops 54

On the docket of sports entertainment for this weekend is a college basketball matchup between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.

The storyline for this game is how much will Jodie Meeks score? The last time Meeks played the Tennessee Volunteers he dropped a Kentucky basketball record 54 points.

The video above contains all 54 points with the original audio from the game.

Eye-rony!

One of the big names that was floated around during the NBA trade deadline was Amare Stoudamire of the Phoenix Suns. The Suns were shopping Amare to Chicago, Portland, and Cleveland.

Well, Amare Stoudamire probably should have kept wearing those googles in the picture above. Stoudamire could be out for the rest of the season due to having surgery on a partially detached retina in his right eye. He resuffered the injury in the victory against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

We already had the Tyson Chandler debacle with the Thunder, now this. This is defintely eye-rony, (I know, lame.)

Nate Robinson makes an appearance on Letterman

With the NBA tradeline officially over, we can now go back to actually talking about the game. Specifically, Knicks guard Nate Robinson making an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Robinson made an appearance last night where he slammed over Letterman's right-hand sports correspondent Biff.

It's nice to see that the Knicks still have something to cheer about even if it is the hops of a undersized guard.

Today's Moment of Zen: Conan's string dance in the NFL

In today's moment of Zen, Conan O'Brien has his final "Late Show" tonight and we would like to pay tribute to him and his "string dance."

We flashback to week eight of the NFL season where the Houston Texans took on the Cincinatti Bengals. Houston wide receiver David Anderson received the pass and went on to do the string dance.

Very sadly, CBS announcers Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker had no idea what was it. Oh well, good luck on "The Tonight Show" Conan.

Mike Leach to stay with Texas Tech

The real story from the prior college football season was the story of the Texas Tech Red Raiders and their head coach Mike Leach.

Well, there was an issue in which Leach was offered a contract extension and there was some doubt that he would resign as the head coach of Texas Tech.

However, that long national nightmare is over as he has resigned for a five deal worth up to 12.7 million dollars. There were some provisions added if he interviews with any other team in college or the pros.

Leach has always been seen as somewhat for a mad scientist is most known for having an animatronic skelteon in his office. However he is great football coach who has a career record of 76-39 and has taken Texas Tech to a bowl in each of seasons with the team.

Designated For Assignment Doesn't Always Mean You Leave the Team

Mostly because I'm curious like a cat (I have a couple of friends who call me whiskers), I googled Tanyon Sturtze today. And found out he's still been in the major leagues. Kind of.

A little bit of back story. Tanyon Sturze was one of my favorite players (again, kind of) ever. He's a Worcester, Massachusetts native, right near where I grew up. He went to my high school's so called rival and then attended Quinsigamond Community College, which is famous for being the place I always teased my Dad I'd go to college. Once in the majors he middled for a while until becoming the ace of the Devil Rays for 2 years from 2001-2002 (11-12 year one, 4-18 the second). But then he was a Yankee, and so my love for him left.

Well today I searched his name and found two tidbits.

One - That he was drafted by the Athletics in 1990 and therefore has had almost a 20 year career in professional baseball (wow).

And Two - Last year, after originally being almost cut by the Dodgers and then finally actually designated for assignment by them, came back to work as their third bullpen catcher/sort of bullpen coach.

I know he was loyal to Joe Torre and that's got to get you something, but three bullpen catchers seems a little bit excessive. However, Sturtze did have a positive effect on Jonathan Broxton in his one stint as a non active rostered Dodger. So that's something nice to tack on to that nearly 20 year long resume.

Ken Griffey Jr. back to Seattle

In the 90's, Ken Griffey Jr. was the city of Seattle. Although the Sonics and Seahawks were in town, Griffey was the main attraction for the Seattle Mariners.

There are many people who credit Griffey as one of the greatest power hitters of all-time and helped baseball grow in the city of Seattle.

Now he is on his way back, Griffey signed a one-year deal which could be worth up to 4.5 million dollars. Although, Griffey is well past his prime, his return to Seattle can only help his legacy.

Maybe it will not be the same Griffey but for the long suffering city of Seattle, it's some good news.

The NFL fines department must have been closed

Does everyone remember Santonio Holmes celebration in the Super Bowl? If you can't it is posted in the above video. For all of you who do not know what it is, that is the Lebron James chalk toss.

Well, now it is going to cost Santonio a cool $10,000 in a fined levied by the No Fun League. Most of you are probably asking right now, isn't that a little late? That was the same thing I was asking but I guess due to President's day and the two week lay-over from the Super Bowl, that's the reason why.

Oh well, at least it's not $10,000 more for Santonio to go buy weed and hookers with.

Mike Singletary took his pants off - NFL Transactions 2/17-2/18/09

A few huge cuts have either happened or will happen shortly, as well as some interesting franchise tag choices, but one of the most interesting stories has to do with another signing of an already cut player.

The Patriots brought back old friend Tully Banta-Cain today, as well as some practice squad TE named Brad Listorti. Why is this interesting? Well for one, because I'm a Patriots fan. But for two, because it found me this pretty funny video about how Mike Singletary had to visually demonstrate the "caught you with your pants down" metaphor to his team. Good stuff I tell ya.

In much much bigger transaction news, Dre Bly was cut by the Broncos yesterday. Once one of the best corners in the NFL with the Rams and Lions, he has looked kind of lost the last two years opposite Champ Bailey in Denver. His cut was originally reported as saving the Broncos $6.8 million next year, but in actuality will cost them about $2.6 million, which puts their running total of money saved this offseason at about $25 million. Wow, that's got to feel nice. Don't spend it all in one place. The Broncos additionally restructured the deal of linebacker D.J. Williams, saving them $3.6 million this year.

Deuce McCallister was shown the door by the Saints yesterday, a somewhat expected move considering his role changing due to Pierre Thomas and the $7 million dollar cap hit he was set to receive this year. Apparently the one goal he still wants to accomplish in the NFL is to win a title, but it'll be interesting to see how many title worthy teams are seeking a veteran powerback with bad knees and a possible four game suspension as baggage.

Lastly, another unexpected but very sad move, Marvin Harrison is going to be cut very soon by the Colts. Given the fact that the Colts have been grooming Anthony Gonzalez and that Harrison was due $13.4 million in this coming year, the writing was on the wall (his cut will save them more than $7 million in cap space). But the veteran is a great player and a great man, and so it's a shame to see him exit Indianapolis in such quiet fashion. Hats off to you Harrison.

NBA roundup: Randolph suspended, NBA Trade, and McGrady injured

Los Angeles Clipper forward Zach Randolph has been suspended for two games for the punch that he threw at Phoenix Sun Louis Amundson in the Clippers 140-100 loss against the Suns.

Randolph commented that Amundson got to close to him and allegedly "tried to plant a kiss on him" when he cold-clocked him.

Amundson claimed that he did not try and kiss Randolph but only got in Randolph's face due to something Randolph said to him.

In other NBA news, a trade has occured between the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls which sent John Salmons and Brad Miller to Chicago for Drew Gooden, Andres Nocoini, Michael Ruffin and Cedric Simmons. (Ruffin was traded to Portland for Ike Diogu and cash in a subsequent deal.)

Also, Rockets star Tracy McGrady who was part of many trade rumors has stated that due to injury he will be out for the season. A knee injury that sidelined him earlier in the season is the reason why.

Maybe Craig Sager should fire his stylist...

We all know that Kevin Garnett is not a huge fan of Craig Sager's attire. First it was in a game against the New York Knicks where he questioned if Craig knew what retro was.

Now after the All-Star game in Phoenix, he comments that "he should just burn his suit."

I will always give Sager credit that he dares to be different and once he started wearing these crazy get-ups, he started winning awards for reporting.

I guess the moral of this story is that....well I'm still thinking about that one.

Your NBA Trade Deadline Update….Carter to Houston?

The NBA trade deadline is coming up soon and here are the current deals that have been made and some rumors.

->New Orleans Hornets center Tyson Chandler is on the move to Oklahoma City as the Thunder acquired him for the Joe Smith, Chris Wilcox, and the draft rights to DeVon Hardin. The deal is currently be talked about as a cap cutting move on New Orleans part due to the current stat of the American economy.

->Boston Celtics guard Sam Cassell has been traded from the Celtics to the Sacramento Kings for a second round pick.
This deal is being talked about as being made due to the NBA luxury tax since the second round pick that Boston receives is heavily-protected by the Kings.

->Rumor: The New Jersey Nets and Houston Rockets are currently stalled in a trade that would send Vince Carter and Trenton Hassell to the Rockets and Tracy McGrady to the Nets.

The deal is currently stalled due to McGrady’s contract. McGrady is set to make twenty-two million dollars in 2009-2010.

->Rumor: The three-team deal that would send Chris Bosh to Chicago and Amare Stoudamire to Toronto appears to be dead for now.

The deal was talked about as a rumor in the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago in the deal would have traded the expiring contract of Drew Gooden, Tyrus Thomas, and a possible pick.

->Rumor: The Cleveland Cavaliers are talking with the Washington Wizards about forward Antawn Jamison.

The deal is far from complete but it is being talked about.

Hopefully she will not become the NHL's version of Jessica Simpson.

Only the Cincinnati Bengals could franchise a kicker..

When most people think of the NFL franchise tag, most people would assume that it would be used on star to keep them for one year or a position played with a large salary that the team does not want to pay.

Well, the Cincinnati Bengals have franchised their kicker Shayne Graham. Yes, you heard right, kicker Shayne Graham.

Some NFL experts assumed that they might try and keep WR TJ Houshmandzadeh but they have seemed to give TJ his wish.

Shayne Graham's field goal percentage of 85.6% ranks fourth all-time on the NFL list for kickers. He also holds many Bengals kicking records.

So Bengals fans, you franchised a kicker. Even Oakland Raiders fans are laughing at you.

(Also, according to Cincy Jungle there have been three kickers that have been franchised tagged and this year the Atlanta Falcons franchised punter Michael Koenen. Much apologies for this oversight but we are still laughing at it.)

Today's Moment of Zen: NBA marriage proposal, Epic Fail

Although this video is a year old, this is still one of the funnier clips on youtube.

This comes from a regular season game that happened a couple years ago at a Houston Rockets home game against the Sacramento Kings.

Hath no fury like a Billie Gillispie scourned...

In a prior post, we talked about Kentucky head basketball coach Billie Gillispie and his repor with ESPN sideline analyst Jeanine Edwards.

Now a new twist into the story has come up and at this point is a rumor being discussed by SportsbyBrooks. Allegedly Gillispie who is currently divorced tried to make a pass at Jeanine during the season, she declined his advances.

This now seems to make a little more sense of why Gillispie has in recent interviews been abrasive to Miss Edwards.

If this story is true, (please let it be) this might be the first time that a coach in the SEC could not complete a pass.

NFL Transactions 2/16/09 - The Day Fred Taylor was no longer a Jaguar

Mike Brown being cut by the Bears? Expected, but semi shocking.
Fred Taylor being cut by the Jaguars? Expected, but...wow

Taylor, 16th on the All Time NFL Rushing List with 11,271 yards, has had a storybook NFL career. Early on he had so much promise but was fragile, which costs him 23 games between 1999 and 2001. But from 2002 (where he started 16 games) onward, Taylor has proven to be durable enough for NFL punishment and fast enough to change the game in an instant given his absurd 4.6 YPA. He wanted to stay with the Jaguars and wouldn't have been around much longer as he apparently only wants to stick around until he passes Jim Brown's career total, which at 1,041 could be done in one season. But the Jaguars needed to pass the reigns to Maurice Jones Drew sometime, it's just a shame it has to come at the expense of such a great guy. Taylor was due $6 million next year.

In other news, Chris McAlister was cut today by the Ravens. A little shocking considering his 10 years with the team, but he has had issues with injuries and inconsistency as of late and was scheduled to make $8 million next year. Even more shocking? McCalister has made three Pro Bowls, while Taylor has made one. Regardless, both should be picked up, though obviously for less pocket change than they were expecting.

In the money move of the day, the Denver Broncos cut Dewayne Robertson, Jamie Winborn, Niko Koutouvides, Nate Jackson, Marquand Manuel and John Engelberger. While none of these players are big, big names, a few of them were receiving huge contracts. Robertson was due $16 million next year as part of a contract he got in his younger years, while Koutouvides (3.062 million), Winborn (2.25 million), and Engelberger (2.185 million) were due a ton too. Between this and a few cuts the other day, the Broncos have freed up about $30 million in cap space for new head coach Josh McDaniels to rebuild this team. If only second chances were always this easy.

Lebron's favorite All-Star moment: Mimi in the MJ Dress

There have been many memorable All-Star moments from MJ's triple-double, Magic Johnson's return in Orlando, and Larry Legend shooting the lights out.

However, when the Cleveland Plain-Dealer asked Lebron James favorite moment in the All-Star game while watching on television.

Lebron replied, "Seeing Mariah Carey in the Michael Jordan shirt-dress," he said with a grin. "Whew. I was a only senior in high school, I was old enough."

It looks like Mimi got his blood pumping, that was from All-Star 2003 in Atlanta. Remember before Mariah went crazy and then got married to Nick Cannon.....better times.

Busted: Your Police Blotter for Professional Athletes

Whenever there is a fair amount of criminal activity by professional athletes, this is where "Busted" comes in,

->Suns guard Jason Richardson was pulled over in Scottsdale, Arizona for going 90 mph in a 35mph zone. The officer also stated that there was a young child is Richardson's son not restrained by a car seat.

Richardson was booked on counts of reckless driving, excessive speeding, and failure to use a child seat.

->Buffalo Bills RB Marshawn Lynch was booked over the weekend on a felony gun charge. Last Wednesday in Culver City, California, Lynch along with two other men were pulled over in a 2006 Mercedes Benz.

A subsquent investigation found that there was a firearm in the vehicle that belonged to Lynch. He was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm.

->And, Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed faced charges of Criminal mischief and damaging a paper towl dispenser.

Reed was at gas station in New Alexandria, Pennslyvania where he became enraged when the paper towel dispense did not contain any paper.

Reed then left the gas station cursing profanties at the staff of the gas station for the lack toilet paper in the bathroom.

Take the Pro Bowl from Hawaii, Hell no!

Okay, a lot of you are probably asking the question right now. Why should I care about the Pro Bowl moving from Hawaii to Miami? It was announced a couple weeks before the Super Bowl that the Pro Bowl would be leaving Hawaii in 2010 so that it could be played in Miami, a week before the Super Bowl.

To be honest, most fans care little about the game itself, but in the end it is to reward the players who have a good season. The location of Hawaii has a mystique that very few locations have in the world, and I understand why players would be irritated that it would be taken away from them. Why would you not like going to a tropical paradise where you can sip mai-tai’s and listen to Don Ho?

To put it lightly, the Pro Bowl is like summer camp for the players. They live for a week in a fancy hotel and receive the special treatment that the Hawaiian Islands have to offer. Then, they get to play an exhibition game against an opposing team from the other conference. Old friendships get renewed and new ones can be created from that little trip out to Hawaii to play a game.

While most of you are probably asking right now, why should I care about some spoiled athlete getting a free trip to Hawaii? My issue is with the game being taken away from Hawaii and being played on the mainland. The Pro Bowl is one of the very few all-star games that have a specific location and once you move it out of that location it just becomes another all-star game. The Pro Bowl is also a revenue-generator for Hawaii since it will bring in tourists who want to watch the game and the players who will spend money when they are there.

Many people would say that I should be at issue with game being played one week before the Super Bowl. To be honest, I think this is actually a good idea since it would provide the possibility for the Super Bowl to be the final game. The one argument against this is that the participants who make it to the Super Bowl would not be able to attend the Pro Bowl. To be honest, the players who do not attend the pro bowl for personal reasons or nursing injuries are in the same boat.

I can see the reason why NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would try to cut costs and create some additional revenue for the city for where the Super Bowl is going to be played. To be honest, the Pro Bowl originated in Los Angeles and only moved to Hawaii in 1980. However, the Pro Bowl is more than just an exhibition game, it is a chance for players who play on different teams to relax with one another in a tropic location and provide a show for the folks of Hawaii.

There are some things that need to be changed in the NFL; this is not one of them. Maybe Terry Tate should have a word with him.

Today's Moment of Zen: Daytona 500 crash caused by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Today's moment of Zen comes from NASCAR as the Daytona 500 ended in rain-shortened victory for Matt Kenseth.

However, a crash caused by Dale Earnhardt Jr stole the show.

We also love Michael Waltrip's commentary, "That ain't going to work boys."
