2011 NBA Finals More About Altering Identity Than Hoisting The Trophy

This year’s NBA Finals may crown the champion for this NBA season, but the teams that will play in it have been ready for this moment way before the start of this year.

In 2006, Dirk Nowitzki and his Mavericks slumped back into the locker room after being shellacked by the Heat in four straight losses, which was proceeded with wins in the first two games of the Finals. With that being the franchise’s only attempt at winning a title in their history, it was chalked up as another tally in the lose column for a team with no championships despite being constant regulars in the playoffs.

Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh were all heralded as dynamic players who were deeply beloved and followed since all three were drafted in the top five of the 2003 NBA Draft. Since they all joined up with the Miami Heat last summer, they have now been identified as the biggest antagonists in all sports because of their selfishness to come together and form an overpowering dynasty intent on taking over the NBA.

Both teams will now come to a head in the NBA season finale, with the winner understanding that it’s not just the Larry O’Brien trophy at stake, but a bigger justice of shedding away the negative connotations attached to themselves and their franchises.

The only two remaining members from the 2006 Mavericks team may be Nowitki and Jason Terry, but the rest of the team is filled with members who have been tagged with the same identity of being a choker throughout their careers.

Point guard Jason Kidd will go down in history as one of the top point guards to have ever played the sport of basketball. Yet, despite the numerous triple-doubles, all-star selections, and gold medals he’s won with the USA Olympic Basketball team; the former University of California, Berkeley star has come up empty in his previous thirteen postseason appearances (including two Finals losses to the Spurs and Lakers as a New Jersey Net).

Being in the playoffs regularly was always a part of Peja Stojakovic’s career. Having played in 76 postseason games for the Kings, Hornets, and Pacers, the 33-year-old sharpshooter was a notable part on a variety of team’s runs through the playoffs. Yet, he’s always come up short of being on a franchise that can truly call themselves champions.

Nowitzki, Kidd and Stojakovic’s inability to claim an NBA title as their own isn’t just reflective of Dallas’ key players, but for everyone who currently wears the teal and grey colors of the Mavericks. Of all the fifteen players on the current roster, no player has ever gone on and been a part of a championship team.

Being successful is an identity many of the guys on the squad have always had, but their constant failing to win a NBA title has always dominated their triumphs.

Supremacy is exactly the reason James, Wade and Bosh decided to join and stick around in Miami. The idea of “taking their talents to South Beach” was an excellent notion in the eyes of the three superstars. The choice to control their future was in their hands after the end of 2010 NBA playoffs, but none of them could have imagined just how hated they would become when it happened.

Prior to this season, the three were the darlings of the league. They were beloved in any city they went to play in and sold out stadiums anytime they were the opposition’s road team. All three were deemed saviors of their franchises and for a league whose key players were entering the twilight of their careers. Never had any of them ever had to endure being hated and mocked at any point in their career.

That is, until after their big declaration in Miami.

As they hosted, boasted, and toasted during their celebration party with the city after they all signed on to be a part of the Heat, the would proclaim loudly that not only would they win a title for their city, but they would do it on numerous occasions.

This became the defiant moment when they turned from the face of the NBA to the heels of the league. Everywhere they went they were booed extensively and fans would cry bloody-murder for their teams to destroy them.

When they finished the month of November with a 10-8 record, they were denigrated and laughed at for their pre-season, boastful antics. After constantly dropping games at the tail end of the fourth quarter from January through March, they were scorned as a franchise with high-end talent who were incapable of finishing off teams. Even coach Erik Spoelstra’s comment of players crying in the locker room was made a mockery of and added gasoline to the fire of labeling the Heat as the league’s top adversaries.

All that bantering and targeting of the big three in Miami as the enemy did was enrage them and allow them to grow stronger together for a greater cause: win the championship to erase those labels.

Winning the title is everything to each player in the NBA. It allows them to reach heights that most would do anything to get to. Only fifteen players a year get to say they are champions and reaching that status can do wonders for their legacy.

The Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks understand that concept very well; as the winner of the 2011 NBA Finals will not only be champions, but finally erase the labels they have come to be identified with.

A Teen And A Ping Pong Ball Symbolize Change For Two NBA Franchises

14-year-old Nick Gilbert sits quietly by with a stoic look in his eyes behind his dark, obsidian-black framed glasses. His bowtie sits neatly above his button-up white dress shirt and midnight-navy blue blazer, with all ten fingers interlacing one another perching above the table top of the Cleveland Cavalier’s podium.

A small smirk creeps just slightly upward to the left of his mouth as they introduce him as the representative for the team and the owner (who happens to be his father).

After the presentation for the rest of the other NBA Lottery team’s representatives commences, the league proceeds with the selections for the order of the 2011 NBA Draft. Little Ping-Pong balls with a black number imprint bounce around in a device like the machines at movie theaters with hard, yellow kernels bursting into fluffy, white popcorn.

Each team rep sits with an uneasy, stone face with hope that their selection would be the shocker to nab one of the top picks. Yet, Gilbert sat idly by with a tranquil demeanor on his face and belief that his team would be in one of those lucky slots. He understood the chances were high for his father’s franchise; they had the second (19.9%) and eighth (2.8%) possibility that their ball would pop out as that number one pick.

The selections went in order for picks fourteen through nine. Then came the result for the eighth pick, which pops up as the Detroit Pistons. The Cavaliers now have a guarantee that their lowest selection would be a top three pick, along with their highest probability winner for the top pick. That would eventually garner the fourth spot for the upcoming draft.

Gilbert is now one of the three final reps that stands before the cameras prior to the unveiling for the order of selections three, two, and one. The team logo for the third pick flashes without the words Cleveland or Cavaliers on it (Utah would win that choice). Even though his father’s team now has a 50% chance for the top pick in the NBA Draft, Gilbert is chilling atop the stage, his hands in his pockets, with the same coolness he was exuding all night.

That would quickly change when the Minnesota Timberwolves are the winners of the second overall pick, and the young teen throws up his hands in triumph. His father’s Cleveland Cavaliers are now the sole owners of the first pick in the 2011 Draft.

Not only can they thank their good luck charm, the owner’s son, and the a miniscule ping pong ball for their victory, but also the Los Angeles Clippers.

In a swap that was formulated at the NBA Trade Deadline, the Cavaliers sent PG Mo Williams and swingman Jamario Moon over to the Clippers for PG Baron Davis and that would-be number one pick. Thinking the pick would be of little use to them because of their chances (again, a 2.8% probability to get the number one pick) and a weak draft class, as well as the need to dump Davis’s exorbitant contract and the chance to upgrade his spot with a younger, former all-star point guard; Los Angeles figured they were on the winning end of this trade.

That is, until a little ball bounced in favor of the Cavalier’s young teen representative.

As of now, the trade will still point to the Clippers as the winner, but it may drastically come back to haunt them in a few years. Losing the contract and baggage of Davis will be a load off the franchise’s shoulders, but Williams is not as great an upgrade as some might think.

The eight-year guard was at his best during the two-year period he played with LeBron James, but any player will benefit greatly playing alongside the most dynamic player in the league. The lone all-star appearance can be attributed to the fact that, along with being James’ sidekick, he was the second option on the top franchise that year. He was the only player who could merit the selection out of the rest of the roster. His career averages for points (13.9) and assists (5.0) are pedestrian at best and don’t highlight him as an elite player at his position.

This illustration is important because of the position Los Angeles could have been in with the top selection. Although the draft pool is limited with possible stars, there is one player who has the chance to be great: Duke PG Kyrie Irving.

Standing six feet, two inches tall and 185 pounds, the 19-year-old freshman breakout star may not be in the discussion as an upper echelon point guard (a group that features Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams), but he has the tools and potential to reach that point somewhere in his career. He was the most dominant player on the Duke squad this season and showed consistency running such a veteran team as a first-year player.
His potential to be great is certainly higher than that of Williams and his style of play fits the current roster of the Clippers better as well. Irving loves getting up-and-down the court and can get great looks for his teammates, which would have been the perfect complement to the freakish athletic ability of Blake Griffin and the sweet, shooting stroke that Eric Gordon is armed with.

Aside from the upside and ability edge Irving has over Williams, there is also the age factor. Irving is a much younger player (19) than Williams (28), which would have created a great young nucleus with Griffin (22), Gordon (22), and DeAndre Jordan (22). With the younger Irving at the point, Griffin would see the potential of his team and most likely sign an extension a few years down the road. Yet, it will take Williams to play at the high level he performed at during his All-Star season to keep the Clippers’ superstar power forward to believe his franchise has the right components to be competitive in the future.

Although Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling may live to regret the day he watched the younger Gilbert strike a pose after the Cavaliers’ ping pong ball came up with the top pick, those symbols may be the start of a revival in Cleveland.

After the departure of King James, the Cavaliers lineup was left for despair with more holes than a whole pack of Swiss cheese. Decent role players are sprinkled at various positions (Williams, Anderson Varejao, Ramon Sessions, J.J Hickson, Daniel Gibson, Jamario Moon), but James represented everything to this team and the sum of their parts could never equal his greatness.

So the team decided to take a chance and trade their best asset, Williams, and a player with significance, Moon, and received Davis and the Clippers’ 2011 first round pick in return.

The gamble was well understood when they pulled off the trade back at the deadline; they’ll get an often injured, usually out-of-shape, 31-year-old point guard who will cost them $30 Million over the next two years. The big seller of the trade was the pick, which was probably going to be in the top ten, and the ability to pair it up with their own selection, which would probably end up be in the top five given their record at that time.

Their own pick was in the top five, but the Clippers’ one vaulted over everyone to be number one.

Now, the Cavaliers control their own destiny for the future. They can grab the coveted Irving and have him become the new face of their franchise. They can then complement their top selection with any of the other top players in the draft (Derrick Williams if he falls that far, Enes Kanter, Donatas Motiejunas, Jan Vessely) or trade that pick for extras selections or to a team willing to swap an impact player.

While a drastic change of improvement may not be on the horizon for Cleveland anytime soon (even with the first and fourth pick in the draft), there is now a glimmer of hope breaking through the metropolitan in Ohio.

In the end, both teams may look back at that late February trade as the moment that altered their franchise’s future. Yet, it was ultimately the composed demeanor of a teen and the lucky bounce of a Ping-Pong ball that will forever be remembered as the moment everything changed.

2011 NBA Western Conference Finals: All About Legacy

When Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook step on to the hardwood at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, they will be the center of attention in a very foreign territory.

On the other side of the court, Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki will be treading in familiar waters that they’ve been yearning to return to since their last dip in that pool during the peaks of their careers.

The stage the four players will play on is the 2011 NBA Western Conference Finals as the Oklahoma City Thunder face off against the Dallas Mavericks for a chance to compete in the 2011 NBA Finals.

Intrigue will be a theme that dominates each minute of this series; but a more overbearing concept will be laminated into this battle once game one tips off: legacy.

Determining where a player sits in the echelon of NBA greats will always be measured by a player’s accomplishments. How many MVPs a player wins, the number of times he tops the league in scoring, or other awards and statistical categories he dominates each year will forever be placed side-by-side when comparing one another. Yet, one area of a player’s resume ultimately decides their ranking amongst the all time greats: championships.

Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Reggie Miller, Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, John Stockton, and Karl Malone all had sparkling NBA careers and could form one of the most elite teams every assembled. Despite their awesome abilities, the only flaw that will forever haunt them and keep their names out of discussions as the greatest players of all time is not having that chance to clutch the Larry O’Brien Trophy as their own.

For the Thunder and Mavericks, it’s this theme of legacy that will be at the heart of this series.

Oklahoma City is in a unique position to cement their legacy in such a miniscule time frame. A team that lost over 60 games under their previous alias just over three years ago (Their last season as the Seattle Supersonics in 2007-08) and were eliminated in the opening round during their first trip to the playoffs in 2010, they are now just one step away from contending for top honors in the NBA.

Along with the four-year transitional period the team endured, the Thunder’s chance to carve their legacy in the NBA history books at this point in time is astonishing because most of their personnel are still entering the infant stages of their careers.

Of the fifteen players on their current roster, only two of them are older than the age of 30. Five of their players have more than five years experience in the league and only three have made it to this point in the playoffs on previous teams. The core of the team is comprised of guys who should be finishing up college at this point in their lives (Durant and Westbrook are 22, James Harden and Serge Ibaka are 21).

Despite that inexperience, Oklahoma City has a golden opportunity to seize the moment and control their own destiny moving forward. Chances to etch a legacy in history don’t come along very often, regardless of how off-the-charts a person or team’s talent may be (look up Dan Marino for evidence).

One team with a group of individuals who understand this is their counterpart in this series; the Dallas Mavericks.

While the Thunder were brought together to form a youthful core comprised of enough talent to be contenders for years to come, the Mavericks were assembled with one notion: to win and to do it quickly.

The Dallas roster is peppered with veterans with at least nine years of experience in the league (nine of their fifteen players) and most of their squad is 30 years of age or older (also nine of their fifteen players).

Although most of their roster is made up of stars with illustrious NBA careers, many are missing that one label on their resume as NBA Champions that would allow their careers to come full circle

Nowitzki is always in the discussion as one of the best, big man scorer ever with the ability to score from anywhere, but has been more tormented throughout his career for his inability to bring home the title to the city he’s played in his whole twelve-year career. Kidd is arguably the second greatest point guard ever (behind Magic Johnson), but will never be able to defend that honor in any discussion until he wins a title.

Peja Stojakovic is one of the best three-point shooters ever, but came up short on his numerous attempts to become a champion during the Sacramento Kings’ glory days. Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, and Tyson Chandler all have immaculate NBA careers, but each have yet to complete a season on a team that was crowned as the best that year.

Not only is everyone on their roster gunning to win now to complete their legacy, but their also hoping to erase the notion that this franchise has been notorious choke artists in the past despite their consistency as a playoff entrant.

Since the start of the new century, Dallas has never been below a fourth seed in any post-season. In the past five years, the Mavs have been division title winners twice (2007 and 2010), the top seed in the West twice (2007 and 2010), and won the Western Conference once (2006).

Although they have all that acclimation, they have yet to call themselves NBA champions. In their only appearance in the Finals during the 2006 season, they were ousted by the Miami Heat in six games.

Defeat is perception that will last a lifetime for whichever team losses this series. This Western Conference Finals will feature two franchises on different ends of the spectrum; one with a bright future ahead of them and another nearing the twilight end as of their tenure of dominance.

Either way, one thing is for certain: a legacy will either be paved or nearing culmination once the horn sounds in the final elimination game.

The Tale Of Two Centers In Orlando

It was fifteen years ago that the Magic’s first bigger-than-life superstar packed his bags and descended to the opposite end of the country to Los Angeles.

While the destination might not be the same, a departure ticket out of Orlando might be on standby for their current franchise big man.

For the first time since becoming regulars in the playoffs in 2008, the Orlando Magic were vanquished out of the postseason by the Atlanta Hawks in six games. Even with Dwight Howard’s outstanding performance and dominance throughout the series, the Hawks proved they had the better roster and more firepower in their arsenal than the Magic’s one huge, powerful cannon.

Which begs the question for Howard: can this organization get back to being an NBA Finals contender or will that only be achievable in another uniform?

Shaquille O’Neal understood that fact after his four-year tenure with the team that drafted him number one in 1992. During that time, his team reached the playoffs in three of those four seasons, along with two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and one visit to the NBA Finals. Yet, they never captured the title despite having, arguably, the best center in the league.

It wasn’t until he left that he finally became a champion.

The Magic let their center go to the Lakers via free agency in 1996. From that point on, it seemed as if having O’Neal penciled in as the starting center gave any team instant championship credibility. He would go on to win three titles in Los Angeles and one title with the Miami Heat. His time in the Magic organization appeared to be an illusion when compared to his time with franchises he played on in his prime simply because he never won a title with them.

Orlando themselves fell into dark times during the O’Neal-dominance period in the NBA, as they frantically altered their roster numerous times from 1996-2004 in hopes of rebuilding the franchise into the contender they once were. They tried running it through Anfernee Hardaway, who never became the sensation he was projected to be. They then handed the reins of the team to Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady, but both were hampered by injuries and could never get the Magic past the second round of the post season.

Then came the Howard era in Orlando.

Orlando made him the first pick in 2004 and he has now become an immense presence in the league and for his team. A specimen with a body that is only usually seen on comic book super heroes, the straight-out-of-high-school draftee has that unusual combination of size and speed that only one other player in recent history has possessed: O’Neal. As O’Neal’s labeling as the best center in the league is nearing the end of his tenure, Howard is quickly taking over the helm of that title with his improved offensive ability and post game to go along with his domineering interior defense.

Along with his look and ability on the court was the near replica of franchise production during both of their tenures. In seven seasons with the Magic, Howard has taken his team to five playoff appearances, two Conference Finals trips, and one NBA Finals. Yet, he has only been successful in winning one of the Conference Finals and losing the other, as well as getting beat by the Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals.

Now with this season’s first round loss to the Hawks (in which the Magic were favored and had home court advantage), the question entering Howard’s mind has got to be where does he go from here?

Now at the age of 25 and having already played seven years in the league at this point, all the seven-footer wants is to taste the glory of being called a champion in the NBA. At this point in his career, being called the best center in the league is nothing without the trophy placed next to it.

That was even more evident after the 2010 summer free agency hoopla and the rise of powerhouses in the East going for it all.

LeBron James and Chris Bosh jumped ship from the teams that drafted them to join Dwayne Wade and the Heat to form a core destined to win multiple titles. Carlos Boozer signed with Chicago to play with Derrick Rose in hopes of being a part of an upstart dynasty. Amar’e Stoudemire signed up with New York and eventually was joined by Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to create a formidable young core that will contend in their conference as well.

On the other hand, the Magic have shredded their roster time and time again since they drafted Howard in hopes of equipping their star with the right parts to win a title. Not only have their decisions done little to providing their center with a group that can win a championship, but the constant changes have given him literally no stability in developing chemistry or confidence they have a winner.

As a Magic, Howard has got to feel as if his organization resembles some sort of revolving door with the way players are brought in and quickly let out. He has seen Grant Hill, Trevor Ariza, Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, and Hedo Turkoglu (who then was traded back to the team early this season) brought in as assets to aide Howard in bringing a title to Orlando. All they provided him was more concern and doubt that a championship is probably unattainable in a Magic uniform.

His time in that silver, navy blue and cement-grey uniform he has played in his whole career may be coming to an end after next season. While Howard’s contract is up after the 2012-13 season, he holds the power of a player option after 2011-12.

What does that mean for Orlando? If they don’t want to see Howard leave after next year, they had better give him more than what they gave him this season.

At this point in the season, all the Magic and Howard can do is sit back and watch how the rest of the playoffs play out. Being an observer will only fuel frustration in the big man and increase his pondering if he is in the right situation in Orlando.

If that level of curiosity reaches a boiling point, Orlando may feel a bit of déjà-vu with their second savior departing for a more golden future.
