San Francisco Is Ready To Hop On The Bel-Train

It appears a new train has just come through the Amtrak station over by the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

With a World Series ring in their back pocket and eyeing for another with a current first place lead atop the National League West, the San Francisco Giants made a huge splash by acquiring the top hitter floating around in the trade market: New York Mets Outfielder Carlos Beltran.

Dealing for the switching-hitter wasn’t an easy move for the Giants, as they had to give up their best minor-league pitching prospect in Zach Wheeler to get him. A high prize to pay for a player whose future with the team after this season is uncertain, as he will be a free agent in the 2012 off-season.

So what can the fans of San Francisco expect with their new acquisition and how long will that train be stationing itself in the city by the Bay?

When looking at the current Giants’ lineup, it’s obvious why they need a player of his caliber. The team will be ecstatic that have a switch hitter with pop, as he comes in and instantly leads the team in home runs (Beltran has fifteen, while the player following after him is Pablo Sandoval with ten). That kind of thump in the middle will not only help because he can smash a ball into McCovey Cove, but it will also boost those same totals for those who hit around him (which will most likely be both Aubrey Huff and Sandoval).

That job was supposed to be held by Buster Posey, until he got laid out early in the season and is pretty much done for the year with a broken leg.

The addition of Beltran will also bolster the morale of the pitching rotation, which has surely been weary of a lineup that features little to assist them in wins this season.

The Giants have been putting on a show this season with how exceptional they are with close game wins and forcing opponents to play their style of ball; low scoring battles coming down to whose pitchers can dominate most efficiently. Yet, at some point later in the year or in the playoffs, if they reach it, other franchises will flex their muscles and force San Francisco into a bat-off.

Without Beltran, who will be able to swing with those opponents?

Sandoval will be able to hang with some of the best hitters in the league, but even he will tell you that one hitter is just not enough to push a team through (just look at his totals from 2009 and see where the Giants ended up that season). Now, with Beltran as a teammate, they can put up a fight when the runs category for both teams escalates in any game going forward.

The addition should be an incremental push for Huff to get himself going, as he will most likely see pitches much closer to his happy zone.

Huff was widely considered as the big bat in the middle of the San Francisco lineup. He was an extremely big presence when he joined the club last season and appeared to be ready to prove that he can still be an impact player. It looks as if the hangover from the World Series parties may be getting to the 35-year-old journeyman.

He is currently on pace for career-lows in various categories. Whether it’s the feeling that he’s not as focused as last season or because he’s beginning to dwindle into the twilight of his career, the addition of Beltran should allow Huff to get back into the swing of things, so to speak. He will most likely hit behind their new acquisition, which makes his input even more valuable given that Beltran will most likely get less pitches in the zone and more free passes to first base.

If Huff can recover that magic from last year with his bat in the final 60 games and into the playoffs, again this is just speculation, the move will be an even bigger success given that Beltran was able to affect not only himself, but a player like Huff who is in desperate need of a wake-up call.

The biggest contention that will come with this trade is the fact the Giants gave up a great pitching prospect for a player that may only be on the team for the next few months.

First off, the issue of dealing Wheeler, a stud pitcher who is only 21, for the Mets’ star is not as big a casualty as it appears.

Not only does San Francisco have one of the best rotations in baseball, but it is also one of the youngest. Aside from Ryan Vogelsong (34) and Barry Zito (33), the rest of the staff is either 28 or younger. Jonathan Sanchez (28), Tim Lincecum (27), Matt Cain (26), and Madison Bumgarner (21) are all lynchpins in this rotation and will be the future of the team.

Although the Giants will have to deal with how they can shell out big contracts to keep Lincecum and Cain when they are free agents in the next year or two, illustrating to their staff that they will protect them by acquiring hitters and getting the best team possible around them will help in future negotiations with their star hurlers.

In regards to the future of Beltran as a Giant after the 2011 season, no one can say for sure if this will be a one-way trip onboard this train.

Of course, the six-time all-star will be looking for a big money contract after this year, but what if this current squad is able to pull off the unthinkable and win their second straight title? Not only could that mean that the Giants may possible have deeper pockets to lure the star back to San Francisco, but he may see before him the enticing opportunity to win multiple titles for a contender whose window of opportunity expands through next year.

Beltran has only participated in two post season runs during his illustrious career, and he understands that his own chance to play for a successful club who can get into the playoffs in the next few years may currently be on the franchise he just got traded to.

The idea of hitting with Posey and Sandoval around him with the stellar starting and relief pitching may possibly ease tension slightly when it comes to contract negotiations.

If this is indeed a short rental of an impact, offensive player, the San Francisco Giants organization and its fans will be in full elation that they now have a real legit shot at repeating as champions again. The idea of another rousing and raucous celebration down Market Street and into the Civic Center plaza now has more credibility thanks to their newest acquisition.

The only difference would be that everyone won’t be riding on a cable car, but upon their new Bel-train that they luckily were able to secure from New York.

NBA On The Same Road As The NFL, Just A Different Direction

As the NFL finally takes the final junction off the lockout freeway, it appears that the traffic the NBA is enduring is not letting up anytime soon.

Since the start of July 1st 2011, the NBA has shut down its operation and players cannot have any contact with ownership or coaches. The talks to revive hopes of creating a new collective bargaining agreement have since dissipated into silence as both sides have no interest in resolving their issues in the near future.

On the other side of the spectrum, an agreement was finally reached after over 130 days went by since the NFL locked out its players. Realizing that the 2011 season could be lost if they didn’t work out their differences, both the player’s union and owners decided to bury the hatchet on squabbles and bring the public what they want: playing actual football this season.

Although the NFL was able to work out their differences during the longest lockout in the league’s history, a vision of compromise by both sides to end the lockout for professional basketball in America is much hazier at the moment.

The reasoning behind this issue is more understandable when looking from the perspective of the NBA players; they have multiple outlets to which they can produce an income and play basketball.

When it comes to visibility and popularity in sports on a global level, the guys that run on hardwood courts in shorts are bigger phenomenons than their helmet wearing, pigskin-playing athletic cohorts.

Football, arguably, is the most popular sport in America, but it is practically an unknown in discussions outside of U.S. soil. Americans undoubtedly know who Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Larry Fitzgerald, and Adrian Peterson are; but putting a name to a face would be like playing a game of “Guess Who” for anyone outside of the country.

The NBA, on the other hand, have standouts that are rock stars in other continents around the world. That is evident with the recent tournament held out in the Philippines, with the notable attractions being Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul. The event was a huge success, with the players bringing out huge crowds in a country they rarely, if ever, play in.

While the NFL has gone overseas (London) and south of the border (Mexico) to play various games during their regular season, the idea of seeing Manning and Peterson heading anywhere outside of the U.S. to play a tournament or a setup game is pointless because the appeal of their sport doesn’t cross over like the NBA’s does. Not only do mass quantities of players head from their native countries to play pro basketball in America, but Americans go to those same countries and play before foreign fans as well.

With this option in their back pocket, NBA players have alternatives that will allow them escape plans if the lockout continues to extend into the coming months. If the fans of the league want to watch their favorite players they are so fond of, they will most likely have to acquire international cable outlets to get a gander.

Deron Williams is already heading out to Turkey to play since the league appears nowhere near coming to a conclusion on their problems. Bryant appears to be pondering the notion of joining the Nets’ point guard and may ultimately sign on in the near future. Carmelo Anthony and Paul are also considering playing in China as their options during the lockout.

Others might even swap sports as a means of dealing with the break they get during this trying time.

Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love will be losing his basketball shoes and running barefoot atop millions of grains of sand. The former UCLA star will be heading to Manhattan for a pro volleyball tournament event in August, which may possibly lead to future events in the sport.

Now that the NFL lockout is over, another star from pro basketball is thinking about trying to see if he can get back into an activity he hasn’t gone through since college. Nate Robinson may be one of the smallest players in the league, but with a five-foot, nine-inch stature and a previous history as a two-sport stud (he played both football and basketball during his time at the University of Washington), the NFL could be his new calling if the shut down of the NBA lingers.

Given what is transpiring for the players in the NBA, they appear to be in a stronger position of shrugging off the ill-effects of not playing in their professional leagues more so than their football cohorts. The NFL and their players may have taken a lengthy period to reach an agreement, but the players understood that no other decent alternatives were available to combat the issue of trying to earn an income in another competitive football league.

All of these issues lead up to one conclusion for where the NBA lockout will be heading in the near future: stuck in neutral with no road leading to an exit.

The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall In The NBA

There is a saying that is synonymous with winning in the NBA: you can’t teach size.

Height has always been coveted deeply by general managers in the NBA. From the early days when Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell would face off against one another in the 1960s, through 1990s battle in the trenches between Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing; front office personnel have always viewed stature as the foundation for winning in pro basketball.

That vision is now askew for the NBA in the 21st Century.

With the game spreading all over the globe, kids now improving their basketball ability at a younger age, and players bulking up to look nearly superhero-like with intense workout regiments, professional basketball is now moving at a quicker pace with teams getting up and down the court constantly. The giants who were the most important ingredient in the recipe for creating an NBA champion are now seeing their miniature counterparts as the x-factor for success in the league.

The NBA is now becoming a point guard-driven league as they can control the tempo and their teams. The objective is no longer to decelerate, but to push the cadence of the game as smaller players try to beat bigger ones up the court. Key stars for many of the teams barely break the six-foot mark, such as Rajon Rondo (6’1), Derrick Rose (6’3), Chris Paul (6’0), and Deron Williams (6’3).

In order to stick with these smaller rode-runners, centers now must evolve to combine the qualities of a guard with the height of a center. Today, being a superior big man means having freakish agility and athletic ability in addition to superior length. Possessing these qualities is what makes players such as Dwight Howard, Amar’e Stoudamire, and Tyson Chandler remain atop the league at the center position.

Centers who don’t have the necessary flexibility, agility, mobility are finding it tough to keep up with the evolution of the league. Just being tall is no longer the crucial element in being a big man in the league, an issue that is becoming more apparent now given the status of many current centers in the NBA.

In 2002, the Houston Rockets had the first pick and the top player available was an overseas, seven-foot, six-inch colossal giant by the name of Yao Ming. Many pundits viewed him as a cornerstone pick that could carry a team on his back and lead them to numerous titles. He would be their choice and Houston believed they had taken their first step towards a new dynasty since after Olajuwon’s retirement.

The evolution of the NBA into a full-court league was just hitting full throttle at this time and the years that would follow would prove to be difficult for Yao. After his first two seasons, the big man from China would battle nagging leg injuries that would never allow him to complete a full campaign. With many teams in the league playing a more full court style and Yao spending more time in a suit than in a uniform since the middle of 2009, he recently decided to retire at the young age of 30.

Although he was extremely effective every minute he played on the court, Yao never reached the full potential others envisioned when the seven-foot Goliath joined the league in 2002.

This issue of being able to keep up with others on the court and staying healthy consistently has been a pattern for numerous players similar to Yao.

When Zydrunas Ilgauskas was the Cleveland Cavaliers selection in the 1996 draft, people didn’t view his potential at the same level as Yao. They did, however, see him as a player with the ability to be a prominent center in the NBA given his lengthy stature (seven-foot, three-inches). His first season illustrated the budding talent he had, but the style of the league took a toll on his body and he dealt with numerous injuries and surgeries for the three years after his freshman campaign.

Luckily, he was able to bounce back and remain on the court for the following five seasons, but aging and the constant running up and down the court over time would take a toll on his body and diminish his minutes significantly from 2008-2011.

At the opposite end of the country, another big man is finding his career ascending rapidly down the same trail as Yao’s.

Greg Oden left Ohio State with the moniker as the next big man to dominate the league. His massive height and ability to protect the paint where unheralded qualities that Portland felt were too good to pass up and used their number one selection on him in 2007.

Already dealing with a leg problem that manifested during his only college season, Oden entered the NBA as damaged goods due to the up-tempo style of basketball opponents would utilize as a counter against him. He would have micro fracture surgery on his right knee just prior to the start of the 2007-08 season and would miss that whole campaign.

He would return the next season, but would have another setback with a chipped knee cap late that year. The following season, he would hurt his left knee and have season-ending surgery once again. This past year proved to be no different, as he would never make it into a single game as he had micro fracture surgery on that same left knee.

Yao, Ilgauskas, and Oden all have similar qualities and body types, making it visible that centers that appear stiff will look even more rigid when they get on the court with other more athletic stars. The game can no longer cater to the old days; when nine to eleven other players with very little ability dumping the ball into an enormous target who can turn and dunk it on opponents who can’t even stand toe-to-toe with them. These days though, players like Dwyane Wade and Rose can easily reject any lay-up or throw down attempt by their bigger adversaries.

The style of the NBA will continue to evolve, as will the position of center, making it even more difficult for sluggish, inflexible seven-footers to continue to be a part of this progression. Being tall in the league is now like being a dollar in the world economy; it will just continue to lose its value.

Size may not be teachable, but now more than ever, it is becoming more anonymous with success in the NBA.
