High School Team Pays Tribute To Dead Teammate, Gets Called For Excessive Celebration (Video)

In one of the more depressing stories of the week, Louisville High School in Ohio took on Cleveland Walsh Jesuit in the game of football that ended in a controversial fashion.

With less than two minutes remaining Louisville's Alex Schooley appeared to catch the game winning 29-yard touchdown and celebrated along with fellow teammate Gavin Lovejoy by pointing to sky in the honor of fellow deceased friend.

Then a referee decided to throw a flag penalizing Louisville for excessive celebration:

Sadly for Louisville, the penalty gave Cleveland Walsh Jesuit good field position and led to a game winning field goal in Cleveland's 27-26 win.

Has Michael Vick Earned His Second $100 Million Contract?

For those who have spent time in jail, the hardest part after getting out is finding an employer who is willing to put an ex-con on their payroll.

That is, of course, if you can throw a dark, mahogany-brown, spherical-shaped pigskin over fifty yards and have the speed of a world-class athlete.

After one of the greatest comeback seasons ever witnessed in professional sports, Michael Vick is now back atop the league when it comes to getting paper. According to a report by Yahoo! Sports, the Philadelphia Eagles have presented their star QB with a six-year deal worth $100 million, including about $40 million guaranteed.

It’s been a tumultuous ride for the one-time highest paid player in the NFL. After Vick signed that monumental deal with the Atlanta Falcons in 2005 (10-year, $130 Million to be exact), his life spiraled out of control from riches galore, to a living hell, all leading up to a fairy tale possibility of living a “happily ever after” ending.

The former Virginia Tech quarterback was lamented as the most electrifying athletes in all of football, then was plastered with a new moniker as one of the most hated faces in all of sports and was imprisoned for eighteen months in a Federal prison. He slowly began reconfiguring his life as a humbled player just looking for a spot on a professional football team once he left incarceration. This new deal with the Eagles reiterates that the 31-year-old star is back and once again one of the most exciting players in the league.

Then again, does it really mean that?

Although his 2011 season was a marvel to watch and virtually unprecedented in comparison to any other quarterbacks who were given second chances, the body of work for a player to receive such a large reward is a bit of a stunner. Yes, Vick threw for over 3,000 yards, 21 TDs, and a QB rating over 100 in only twelve games last season (feats he’s never accomplished in any full year of his career) and appears to be a true pocket-passer now; but his body of work as a starter since his return back to the NFL (eleven starts in 24 games) is miniscule for a player to be given such an absorbent contract.

So begins the conundrum: is this new contract with the Philadelphia Eagles valid for Vick?

There is no denying the Vick-factor when it comes to games in which he’s behind center.

All eleven defenders must account for the elusive QB because of his ability to break the pocket and make positive plays that appear doomed for loss of yards. It’s even scarier now because of the new found patience that Coach Andy Reid has instilled in his starting quarterback that illustrates his confidence in his arm and ability to read coverages to make the right decision. They don’t just give out a 100 rating for QBs just because he’s great, but because he makes smart choices and gives his team the best opportunity to win.

Despite those eye-popping runs he can make and better all-around play as a pure quarterback in Philadelphia, Vick still hasn’t proved enough to say he belongs in the upper-echelon of elite QBs.

The type of contract that he received is in the same ball park as others such as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Despite getting that kind of money, would any person take Vick over the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots star? What about other QBs who are near those two (such as Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, or Eli Manning)? While he is a much more dynamic player than any of the other six listed, anyone of them would be quickly taken by any GM in the league before Vick would.

Along with the comparison with his cohorts being an issue, there’s the work he’s done leading up to the signing of his new contract. Not only is there the issue of only starting eleven games being too inconclusive to validate his new contract, but there is also the concern of his post season history.

Football, unlike other sports such as baseball and basketball, is very dependent upon performance given that its regular season is only a mere sixteen games. So, while being efficient in the regular season is important for all teams if they want to reach the postseason, it is what they do in the playoffs that constitutes justification on a future big pay day.

As great as Vick is in regular season, he is the total opposite when the playoffs roll around. In the games he has started with the Falcons and Eagles, his record in the playoffs is 2-3, with only one appearance in the NFC title game (which he lost). He’s only had a QB rating over 80 just once in those games and is insignificant when trying to lead a team to just appear in the Super Bowl. Along with the borderline playoff play, his TD total is equal to his INT totals in the post season games he starts (four in both categories).

The hope is that this new massive deal won’t be a revival of the narcissistic Vick that the public saw after he signed on that first big contract extension in 2006 with the Falcons. If he continues to progress as he has done last year and can push his team to the top in the future, then this deal with the Eagles will have validated itself. It’s obvious though that he has much to live up to in order to vindicate that he’s deserving of this bonus, now that the franchise have entrusted him with confidence that he can live up to those expectations in the next six years.

For Vick though; this should be considered as more of a blessing than a contract he’s earned, not just because of the short-length of return, but also due to the fact that many previously imprisoned federal convicts are never given a second chance in life…

…especially not as lucrative an opportunity as he’s been given.

Jeremy Shockey Saves Teammate From Choking On Pork Tenderloin

Most of us know NFL player Jeremy Shockey as the rather colorful and brash tight-end who just signed with the Carolina Panthers.

We can also add another descriptor to his name, life safer. After fellow tight end, Ben Hartsock was choking on some pork tenderloin, it was Shockey who came to the rescue.

We get more from theNational Football Post:

Hartsock is crediting Shockey with helping save him today after Hartsock, a fellow tight end, could not breathe in the team’s lunch room. A piece of pork tenderloin lodged in Hartsock’s throat and Shockey came to the rescue, the National Football Post has learned.

Hartsock tried drinking some water to clear his throat and when that didn’t work it became evident to others in the room he could not breathe.

“He started to go to the bathroom and I don’t know if he collapsed, but he couldn’t breathe,” McCartney said. “Some new guy came and tried to give him the Heimlich. It didn’t work. Then, Shockey hit him in the back pretty hard and out came the meat. The Panthers told me it was really scary.

“Ben told me Shockey came over and gave me the Heimlich Maneuver and saved my life. He was in good spirits and he’s real thankful for Shockey.”

The New Marriage Of Terrelle Pryor & The Oakland Raiders

Marriage is a very sacred partnership where two sides unite to spend their future together. Yet, getting a clear view into what is forthcoming between that bond is the scariest predicament of the union because that vision is ambiguous and blurry. People, situations, and life change over time, which can make any promising marriage go from sweet to sour quickly.

Terrelle Pryor will be hoping for a more refreshing flavor after his latest commitment left a bad taste in his mouth. The troubled quarterback was the poster child for Ohio State’s recent troubles involving their football program and bailed on the school over the summer to head into the NFL. After finally getting clearance by the league to enter the Supplemental Draft, the Oakland Raiders gave up their 2012 third round pick to select him to their franchise.

Although the six foot, six inch, 233 pound star is ready to escape his previous union that crashed and burned dreadfully towards the end of its run, this new marriage to the Raiders illustrates an interesting outlook between the two and brings up an enormous conundrum:

Is this the right move going forward for the quarterback and his new team?

Trying to find the prefect path for Pryor after the Ohio State debacle is like finding a golf ball in the tall weeds; no one clearly knows where to begin searching. Struggle is not a quality that this once highly-touted prospect understands to deal with.

He’s supremely gifted athletically (not many other quarterbacks in the world can run a 4.4 second 40-yard dash) and can make a play materialize out of nothing with either his arm or legs. Yet, he is a project at his position and hasn’t shown that he’s ready to take that next step of being NFL-ready. Pryor is much more in need of guidance from players above him (especially those who play quarterback) and would benefit greatly in the long run with the right mentors surround him.

In other words, he best resembles those adolescent males from the “Teen Mom” television shows who always complain they are ready to become a man, but are clearly too immature to handle all the pressures of being married and a father.

The Raiders appear to have faith that their new acquisition can break out of his juvenile mindset and fulfill that promise he was exuding when he got into Ohio State, but the franchise itself may not have all the necessities the quarterback needs to support its half of the relationship for the long run.

They are nothing like the current great teams such as the Patriots, Colts, or Packers. The Raiders are a team that’s continuing to rebuild and searching for a vision for their future. They have a rookie head coach in Hue Jackson and a roster full of prospects in the 20’s. The only well-known veterans that can command great respect of the franchise are Richard Seymour and Michael Bennett.

The lack of veteran leadership for Pryor is even more evident when looking at the stable of QBs the Raiders have to teach their new addition.

While other rookie signal callers have some of the best guides in the league to educate them on what it takes to be an elite quarterback (Ryan Mallet has Tom Brady, Jake Locker has Matt Hasselback, and Christian Ponder has Donovan McNabb), Pryor has Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller, and Trent Edwards to study under. All three came into the NFL with the bar set high (Boller and Campbell are former first round picks and Edwards was a third round pick), but have yet to establish themselves as a worthy quarterback for any franchise as all three have been cast off by other teams in their young careers.

Although they can be helpful in grooming the 22-year-old phenom on the intricacies of being an NFL quarterback, it’s highly doubtful they can prepare him for success in the league given their own track record in the pros.

With the major work Pryor will need in order to head in the direction of being a successful NFL quarterback and the current state of the Raiders, the new relationship formed with the franchise may ultimately end similar to his last relationship with Ohio State, possibly even worse.

Already the public has seen what happens when the Raiders get their hands on supremely gifted quarterback who needs to be monitored and guided heavily to be successful. JaMarcus Russell was a big risk, big reward number one pick for Oakland back in 2007, but imploded into a bust when he couldn’t maintain his weight, remained settled on his skills with no drive to improve, and never appeared to have his head on straight.

While Pryor has more potential and is a better athlete than Russell, the organization appeared to stand by and idly watched their most prized possession destroy himself rather than grooming and pushing him into the right direction. This could be an ominous sign of the direction Pryor could head with the Raiders if both sides aren’t supportive and helpful of each other’s progression, both individually and collectively.

Assistance and encouragement will be the keys in determining the success of the new union in Oakland, as both Pryor and the Raiders will need each other if this is going to be a long lasting relationship down the road.

For better or for worse...
