Just when you thought that the Harlem Globetrotters had run out of ways to revolutionize the game of basketball, a few short hours from now they will play a game on ice.
Since the NHL's Winter Classic was supposed to be played today but was cancelled by the NHL Lockout, the Globetrotters figured they would step in.
The fine folks over at the Detroit Free Press have the information that you need:
The Harlem Globetrotters announced today that they will wear custom “ice cleats” and hockey helmets and play basketball on the ice rink at Millennium Park in Portage, Michigan at noon Monday.
Former Detroit Red Wing and Michigan State alumnus Kevin Miller will join the Globetrotters for the game.Clearly, traveling in this game will not be called....
There will be no charge for the public to watch.
“We hope the NHL can return to the ice as quickly as possible,” Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider said in a released statement. “But in the meantime, we thought the Globetrotters could help fill the void of professional sporting events on an ice surface. And it’s only fitting we play this outdoor game in Michigan, as our tour continues in (nearby) Kalamazoo the next day.”
